The day after Ash Wednesday Shayne was appointed Community Redevelopment Officer and stationed in a caravan near the community hall in Aireys Inlet.

Over the course of ten months hundreds of locals approached Shayne to share their stories and get his help accessing emergency relief and navigating the challenges that came in the aftermath of the disaster.

Shayne witnessed both community teamwork and tension, the disproportioate impact of the fire on the lives of the elderly, and his work was reported on in various newspapers at the time. It wasn’t until nearly forty years later that Shayne returned to Aireys Inlet as a full-time resident.
