In 1983 Barbara was an ecologist working across dozens of reseach sites in the Aireys Inlet district. She witnessed up close the comprehensive destruction of flora and fauna wrought by the fire, and as part of her work she meticulously recorded the process of regeneration thereafter.
The events of Ash Wednesday shaped Barbara’s career and led to an unprecedented study of the regeneration and recolonisation of marsupial species in the east Otway region in the months and years after the fire.
