In 1983 Bill was captain of the Anglesea CFA and a leader of local crews on the day of the fires. He was forced to balance efforts to defend houses with a responsibility for the safety of his colleagues.
Bill’s experience with bushfire across many decades has equipped him with a widely revered knowledge of the landscape of the eastern Otways and the hazards posed by the kind of extreme fuel loads and weather patterns seen on Ash Wednesday.
