Chris and Mirren and their 18 month old had just arrived to stay at the house of extended family in Fairhaven when Chris noticed smoke on the horizon behing Lorne. They heeded calls from a passing vehicle to get out, and were directed to the evacuation point on the spit in the Anglesea river.

They waited all night with a menagerie of local dogs, cats, horses and people for company as an explosive show of colour and light came from the direction of Aireys Inlet. At sunrise they returned to see the damage for themselves.
