Generations of the Hughes family have enjoyed the natural environment of the Fairhaven area. On February 16 Howard was at the beach when he saw smoke in the direction of Lorne. He reported for duty with the CFA and in the ensuing hours he witnessed up close the incomprehensible behaviour of the wind and the fire tearing through the district.
Howard was chased by flames out of town and only the next day discovered the fate of his wife and young children. Ash Wednesday shaped Howard’s perspective on the power of nature and the responsibilities that come with living on this part of the coast.
