Ian was first Lieutenant of the Aireys Inlet CFA brigade, and on Ash Wednesday, with the captain temporarily out of town, he led his team to assist with the fire approaching Lorne. They made it as far as Cathedral rock before turning back, and later escaped Aireys Inlet to seek refuge on the beach at Urquhart Bluff.

Ian had mixed feelings discovering his house had survived when his colleagues had lost theirs, and his experience with the brigade that day and night left a lasting impression on him.
