Marg was a key figure in the Red Cross response to the emergency while Alan was active with the Aireys Inlet CFA on the day. Ash Wednesday highlighted Marg’s expertise in providing for the needs of firefighters and the community, and her actions during the evacuation from Aireys Inlet and then Anglesea were pivotal in keeping vulnerable people safe. Alan vividly remembers the ‘thundering horses’ of the approaching fire and the hectic scramble that followed.

Both Marg and Alan carry with them a lifetime’s experience of dealing with emergencies through the Red Cross and were at the centre of recovery efforts from the community hall in Aireys Inlet. They observed up close the transformative effects that Ash Wednesday had on the town and its people.
